The Institute, in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), has launched an online patent filing system.
The launch of the system in Kenya makes it the second African country to digitalise its patent filing after Botswana.
“This System is a secure and user-friendly platform on which users can now file and make payments for applications for patents, industrial designs and utility models, entirely online,” Allan Kosgey, the Chairman KIPI Board of Directors, said during the launch.
The Chairman said the System will significantly improve efficiency and turnaround times, making it easier for applicants to apply and protect their industrial property (IP), including patents and industrial designs.
“Inventors can file their applications outside of the traditional office working hours. This will ensure faster processing and enhance cost-effectiveness thereby saving on traveling, printing and physical document handling costs,” he said. Kosgey said the Institute is determined to digitalise all its services in line with HE The President’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda to make public services more efficient, cost effective and transparent.
“I am also pleased to announce that with the support of WIPO we will soon be launching the Trade Mark Online Filing System,” he said during the launch at The Edge Hotel and Convention Centre, South C, Nairobi.
Dr. Juneho Jang, Head, Global Relationship Management Section, Industrial Property Office Business Solutions Division (IPOBSD) at WIPO, said the launch was more than a system going live — it is a stepping stone toward KIPI’s full digital transformation. “It signals that KIPI’s ecosystem is ready to meet the demands of the modern innovation economy, and to serve inventors, businesses and IP professionals with greater speed, transparency, and accessibility,” he said.
He hoped the digitization of patent filing in Kenya will inspire and encourage other intellectual property offices across the African continent.
“We at WIPO stand ready to continue supporting KIPI as you build on this success and advance further along your digital transformation journey,” said Dr Jang.
